What is industrial radio control?

By definition radio control is the use of control signals transmitted by radio to remotely control a device. Within industrial sectors radio control has many applications. These usually revolve around the teleoperation of heavy machinery, sometimes in hazardous environments where operator safety is paramount, or where manual control is simply impractical or inefficient. Increasingly radio control is used to assist in the automation of computer controlled mobile hydraulic applications, where human operator input is minimal or the control relays required are complex.

For point-to-point communication, Hydrastore can supply field bus communication receivers for almost any application. Specific bus interfaces can be matched to most mobile hydraulic systems.

At the most basic level, radio control consists of two fundamentals:

Transmitter

The Transmitter

The control unit that, when triggered, sends commands as a radio signal is the radio control transmitter. This can sometimes be handheld, or part of a fixed terminal.

Receiver

The Receiver

An antenna which receives the radio signals and then interpreted by the circuit board is the radio control receiver. These commands, once verified trigger action from the connected system.

Radio Control Applications

Industrial radio control allows operators to control machinery from a position that offers better visibility, greater freedom of movement or increased distance from the equipment. Concrete Pumps

Radio remote control gives concrete pump operators the freedom to position themselves where they have a clearer view of the operation. Hetronic systems can provide responsive, proportional control for truck-mounted and line pumps, concrete mixers and complex boom systems.

Excavators

From conventional excavators to specialist forestry, drilling and tunnelling machinery, radio control can allow equipment to be operated remotely where the application requires it. Overhead Cranes

Radio Control for Hazardous Environments

For machinery operating in potentially explosive or hazardous environments, Hydrastore can supply Hetronic Ex-rated radio remote control systems for demanding applications including mining, tunnelling, oil and gas, marine and offshore equipment.

The Hetronic range includes intrinsically safe transmitters and Ex-rated receiver solutions with options certified for ATEX and IECEx requirements. Systems are available for applications including Zone 1 and Zone 2 gas environments, Zone 21 and Zone 22
dust environments, and mining applications.

The appropriate equipment and certification will depend on the hazardous-area classification and application requirements. Hydrastore can help identify a suitable transmitter and receiver solution for your machinery and operating environment.

Radio control solutions

Radio control transmitters, and complementing receivers, exist for practically every mobile hydraulic control challenge imaginable. Off-the-shelf radio control solutions will provide the answer to a large majority of application demands. Equally customised radio control solutions can be developed to meet more specialised and unique mobile hydraulic requirements.

Amongst the radio control transmitter solutions which can be supplied by Hydrastore are the Belly Box transmitters. This is carried by an operator and is either fastened to their waist or held in two hands to aid productivity.

Similarly the harness style has fittings so the transmitter can be shoulder mounted. This increases both the safety and comfort of the operator by reducing fatigue whilst out on site.

Hydrastore can also supply fieldbus communication receivers for integration with mobile hydraulic, electronic and industrial control systems. Hetronic receiver options support a wide range of communication protocols, including CANopen, J1939, Profinet, Profibus, Modbus, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT and RS232/RS485, allowing radio control to be integrated with both new and existing machine control architectures.

Compact and easy to operate, Hetronic handheld transmitters are suited to applications where mobility and straightforward control are important. The range includes the MINI, HH, ERGO F, ERGO S and ERGO 120 families, with options including configurable buttons, joystick control, machine feedback displays and single or multi-speed operation.
